Nikita Azad, a college student and gender rights activist started a petition called #HappyToBleed: An Initiative Against Sexism to abolish the misogyny of branding
women as ‘impure and unclean’ while on their period.

She started this initiative as a bold response to the head of a Lord Ayyapa temple in Kerala, Prayar Gopalakrishnan’s statement of forbidding women from entering the holy premises while menstruating. This sparked off a social movement all over India as support poured in via social media.

We commend her dynamic passion to unite the country against gender discrimination. #mhday17 #menstruationmatters
