ACTION FOR MH EDUCATION

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

Girls Reached in 2018: 510,000
2019 Target: 750,000

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is a global programme with the mandate to ensure the safety and wellbeing of refugees, displaced and stateless people, of which there are 68.5 million globally. Among these persons of concern, there are an estimated 7.6 million women and girls of reproductive age for whom menstrual hygiene management is an important issue.

Across their activities from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, UNHCR has made a commitment to displaced women and girls, providing them with menstrual products as standard. They have also published full guides on MHM in emergencies for those working in acute and chronic emergency environments, covering not only the practical aspects of access to products, female-friendly toilets and washing facilities, and waste disposal, but also education for girls and boys on the topic of menstruation.
