Nine girls met at a youth center in Tanant, Morocco for a two-hour course about menstrual hygiene. We watched a short video explaining the anatomy and biological processes of menstruation, learned about the types of menstrual hygiene products available to them in the village, watched a video about how to sew their own cloth pads at home, discussed home remedies and cultural misconceptions about managing period pain, and discussed how we can work together to overcome embarrassment and shame associated with menstruation. The girls created an advocacy poster reflecting their knowledge which read “No to shame, yes to hygiene!” in Arabic. And, the girls each pledged how they will work to improve the situation for all girls.
